About
Hi, I'm Nathan, a professional French Horn player based in the North East of England
After a few years playing the violin, I began playing the horn aged 10, and quickly fell in love with the beautiful sound of the instrument. I studied at the University of York, gaining a BA in music, where I was taught by Max Garrard, Bob Ashworth and Helen Shillito. I then went on to further study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, studying with Jim Mildred, Neil Shewan and Tim Thorpe, and Natural Horn with Anneke Scott, graduating with an MMus in Orchestral Performance in 2023. Whilst studying, I was a member of a number of ensembles, ranging from Symphony Orchestras to Wind Quintets.
I also began building a freelance career during my studies, playing with BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Welsh National Opera, as well as playing for two shows with York Stage Musicals. A keen chamber musician, I am the horn player in the Bute Wind Quintet: a group I helped establish in my final year in Cardiff, which has recently had its residency at the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay extended for a second year. The quintet has also been awarded the Wind Plus Chamber Music Prize, 2023, as well as the June Emerson Wind/Brass Launchpad Prize, 2023.
